BOKO HARAM: HOW SAFE IS OUR ENVIRONMENT - SOIL, AIR AND WATER?

The environmental damage to our local soil, air and water by the incessant attacks of Boko Haram should be examined and brought to focus. What kinds of weapons are these terrorist groups using? What is the physical, chemical, radioactive and biological configuration of their armory?  We must draw our attention to these areas in the fight against terrorism. Until we figure out the environmental, health and safety implications of terrorism, the fight against terror is incomplete. Until we evaluate the level of damage done to our ecology we cannot truly state the total impact of this fast growing menace on Nigeria.
The Federal Government of Nigeria and relevant agencies such as NESREA should as a matter of great environmental importance conduct Post Attack Environmental Impact Evaluation (PAEIE) in spatial locations like Iyanya, Chibok, etc to ascertain the degree of harm done to the environment by Boko haram bombs. Surface soils should be analysed, ambient air quality should be assessed, surface and underground water should also be tested and remedial action taken where necessary. We all know that insurgents meant no good for the society, how then can we underestimate how extreme they can go to cause terror? Nigeria is our country; therefore, we must join hands to make it better, safer and healthier. As the country makes concerted efforts to address the inherent security challenges, let's also take the environment into consideration by protecting it.
Remember the environment is not our exclusive heritage, it also belongs to generations yet unborn.
